Our = Walk-a-Thon=20 was a great success! This is our sixth annual Walk-a-Thon. As you know = May is=20
Mental = Health=20 month, so we at Genesis House and all the member=E2=80=99s = couldn=E2=80=99t wait to get started.=20
To get = our first=20 day going, we had a visitor =E2=80=9CClayton Klein=E2=80=9D walk with = us. We walk every day at=20
lunch = time and=20 we keep walking all year. Many of us really enjoy walking on a regular = basis. We=20 get
to see = fellow=20 members in a different way and you learn more about a person when you = walk=20 to-
gether, just=20 being out in the community.
We = also made out=20 a map of around Fowlerville; we mapped out a 1 mile, =C2=BD mile, and = 1/4 mile=20
route. = Everyone=20 picks the one they can walk.
The = results of=20 our Walk-a-Thon were great. They were as follows, the goal was to raise=20
$1,000 = and we=20 were able to raise $1,026.00. Our goal for miles was 200 miles, and we = walked=20
237miles. The=20 goal for number of participants was 40, and we had 47 walkers. So we = went over=20 all
of our = goals.=20
We = appreciate=20 the generosity of all of our donors. Thank you for standing by Genesis=20
House. =

This = summer has=20 proven to
be a = busy time=20 both for work-
ing = members and=20 for everyone
on the = Employment=20 and Ad-
ministration Unit=20 (EAU). The
clubhouse=20 continues to provide
many = valuable=20 opportunities for
members = who are=20 interested in
gaining = or=20 maintaining employ-
ment.=20
Our = total number=20 of
Transitional=20 Employment (TE)
positions is now=20 at six. The
two = newest=20 positions are at
Leppek = Nursery in=20 Brighton as
Nursery = Assistants. We also
have = one position=20 at
McDonalds and a=20 clerical posi-
tion at = Asahi=20 Kasei, a plastic
production=20 facility in Fowler-
ville. = Lastly,=20 we have two
Community Mental=20 Health
positions; one=20 as the Transi-
tional = Apartments cleaning
assistant and=20 one as a courier
for = inter-office=20 mail.
Members who are=20 inter-
2007 = garden. We=20 wanted to
keep = it simple=20 and grow what
we = know. Since=20 strawberries
and = raspberries=20 are perennial,
we = only needed=20 to plant the
tomatoes.=20
To = fill up the=20 rest of the tilled
space = we planted=20 a flower gar-
den. = Look for=20 sunflowers and
cosmos = near the=20 daisies that
grow = under the=20 apple tree.
Also = check out=20 the beautiful
blooms = that are=20 spilling over
the = edges of our=20 planter boxes.
The = word on the=20
garden = is bumper=20
crop = of the most=20
delicious=20 strawberries
ever. = We weeded=20
and = netted, the=20 sun
shone, = the rain=20 fell
and in = June we=20 began
enjoying the=20 tasty
fruits = of our=20 labor. In
July = we=E2=80=99ll=20 harvest
raspberries and=20 in August, tomatoes.
Downsizing was=20 the plan for the
Stop = and smell=20 the roses. They were
selected many=20 gardens ago for their
fragrance as=20 well as their beauty.

The = Advisory=20 Board at
Genesis=20 Clubhouse meets once
a = month, usually=20 in the middle
of the = month.=20 The discussion
is = mainly on job=20 development,
what = is going on=20 at the club-
house, = and our=20 goal toward
ICCD=20 certification. The Advi-
sory = Board helps=20 with job de-
velopment=20 through their con-
tacts = in their=20 Community. They
also = help with=20 Advocacy and
brainstorming=20 fund-raising

=E2=80=9CTransitional=20 Employment=E2=80=9D
board = in the EAU=20 area to see
who = the=20 placement managers
are = for the TE.=20 The most im-
portant factor=20 in choosing a
member = for a TE=20 is motivation
to = work. A good=20 way to dem-
onstrate that=20 you are moti-
vated = to work is=20 through club-
house=20 involvement and by
speaking to the=20 appropriate
placement=20 manager. Tom and
Talena, the=20 members selected
for = the new=20 Leppek TE, have
gotten = great=20 reviews from their
bosses. The work=20 can be very
physical at=20 times but the
clubhouse is=20 proud of Tom
and = Talena=E2=80=99s=20 hard work and
commitment.=20 Great job you

We = made our goal=20 of a little over
$1000.00 which=20 will be put to good use.

treks = walking=20 from Paradise in Michigan=E2=80=99s
Upper = Peninsula=20 to downstate to Hell
Michigan & on=20 to the Ohio Border.
Since = walking=20 offers such great overall
health = now we=20 regularly walk all year round.
There = really is=20 a connection with physical
health = as well=20 as mental health they both go
hand = & hand.=20
The = article also=20 highlighted other activi-
ties = going in=20 Genesis House including the
positive goals=20 in the Transitional Employ-
ment = Program.=20
A = Genesis House=20 goal is to have half the
Clubhouse=20 members working at any time
that = we choose=20 for the recovery process
when = the person=20 feels ready. Work is a very
important part=20 for what we do at GH be-
cause = it=20 enriches our lives for the better.
=E2=80=9CTE=E2=80=9D works very=20 well. The positions
are = usually six=20 to nine months long.
The = work=20 experience helps the self-
confidence that=20 we should have.
There = are many=20 activities & events
giving = the=20 members the opportunity to
work = together=20 either in the Clerical
Department or in=20 the kitchen area
where = the meals=20 are prepared.
GENESIS = HOUSE IN=20 THE NEWS

CHANGES STEM=20 FROM DEFICIT REDUCTION ACT
In the = past year=20 the federal government
has = begun=20 reviewing the Medicaid expen-
ditures = under the=20 Deficit Reduction Act.
The = purpose of=20 the act and subsequent
reviews = is to=20 reduce the federal deficit
by = decreasing=20 Medicaid expenditures. As
a = result,=20 reviewers are looking at specific
expenditures and=20 are targeting costs
associated with=20 services that are not part
of the = scope of=20 the services we are
funded = for.=20
In a = recent=20 review of a Clubhouse in
Michigan the=20 reviewer interpreted dis-
counted lunch=20 prices and subsidized
social = activities as =E2=80=9Cgifts=E2=80=9D to consumers
which = is not=20 allowed under Medicaid
guidelines.=20
What this=20 means to Genesis House
members=20 is that we need to sell
lunches at=20 actual costs and that
CMH/Genesis=20 House cannot help mem-
bers = with the=20 costs of social activities
(i.e. = GH cannot=20 contribute $2.00 to-
wards = admission=20 to a museum, movies,
bowling games or=20 any other costs associ-
ated = with social=20 activities.)
The = clubhouse=20 met on June 7

storm = and=20 implement changes so that we
can = comply with=20 the finding while at the
same = time work=20 toward making lunches
and = social=20 activities as affordable as pos-
sible = so that=20 people can still get a nutri-
tious = meal and=20 be involved in socializing

Ozone = house is a=20
non-profit=20 organization
located in Ann=20 Arbor
Michigan. It=20 provides
services for=20 youths 10
to 20 = years old=20 and
their = families=20 including
temporary and=20 long
term = shelter,=20 individual
and = family=20 counseling,
case = management=20 and
an = array of=20 other pro-
grams.
The = main=20 location
on = Washtenaw=20 Ave. is
home = to the=20 crisis hot-
line = where=20 individuals
such = as myself=20 volun-
teer = our time=20 after
thorough=20 training to
handle = emergency=20 calls
such = as family=20 conflict,
homelessness,=20 suicidal,
and = sexual=20 assault, just
to = name a few.=20 I've
been = working the=20 crisis
line = for over a=20 year
now. = My=20 involvement
in = this type of=20 work
stems = from my=20 own
upbringing as an=20 inner
city = youth=20 living in pov-
erty. = But the=20 satisfac-
tion I = got from=20 helping
so = many and=20 seeing the
impact = I've had=20 has
helped = me as an=20 individ-
ual. = It's given=20 me a feel-
ing of = importance and
has = helped=20 remarkably
with = my mental=20 illness.
There = are=20 others
within = different=20 ranks
of the = organization that
have = mental=20 illness and
we've = proven=20 that we
can = make a=20 positive
impact = on=20 peoples lives.
Getting involved=20 and
volunteering is=20 some-
thing = I=20 encourage any-
one = dealing with=20 a
mental = illness=20 to do. It's
a = wonderful=20 feeling.

partment got=20 their main job out-
sourced over to=20 Mexico, so we had
given = up the=20 Neptune job contract.
Neptune=20 Industries had a job at
Work = Skills=20 previously which I even-
tually = did for=20 them=E2=80=94 inserting cer-
tain = different=20 parts into plastic bags
and = placing them=20 into boxes. Not
only = that, but=20 before that I was
working on my=20 Material Handling
job = for=20 Plastomer=E2=80=94 dumping scrap
into = the Work=20 Skills compactor and
also = packing and=20 assembling card-
board = boxes and=20 doing cleanup.
However, I=20 applied for the posi-
tion = offered by=20 CMH =E2=80=94 Working
at the = Trans=20 Apartment buildings as
a = cleaning=20 employee. I went first
and = got a=20 physical and passed with
no = problem. My=20 starting date for
employment was=20 actually Tuesday,
May 29 = and I=20 want to tell you all
that I = couldn't=20 Really be any hap-
pier = than I am=20 now!!!!

new = clubhouse.=20 Dreams Unlimited
clubhouse is=20 located in Royal Oak.
They = showed us=20 around and we met
some of = the=20 members. After the tour
they = had food for=20 everyone. They really
had a = nice=20 Clubhouse.
The = members who=20 gave the tour
were = very=20 friendly, and they made us
feel = welcome.=20
The = Kitchen unit=20 was big and organ-
ized. = The=20 Clerical unit was very organ-
ized = with=20 several sections. They had a
nice = director=E2=80=99s=20 office and Employment
unit = area; they=20 even had a Xerox room.
They = have a=20 little place there that they
sell = used=20 clothes, so if the members
need = some they=20 could get it at a good
price, = including=20 clothes for work. This
is = nice to have.=20 We feel we got some
great = ideas.=20 Events and tasks were on a
white = bulletin=20 board, with names and
members and=20 tasks.
They = are doing a=20 great job at
Dreams. The=20 members & staff fixed
all = the food:=20 now this is working to-
gether, this is=20 very important to a
clubhouse. The=20 building is big and
they = have a=20 really nice set-up. After
they = are there=20 awhile they will have
everything set=20 where they want it to
be. = They are so=20 proud.
Thanks = to Dreams=20 Unlimited for
having = us. Keep=20 up the good work,
hope = to see you=20 all soon.
Livingston=20 County=E2=80=99s Clubhouse, at-
tended. Claudia,=20 a member of Genesis
House = was=20 Livingston County=E2=80=99s repre-
sentative and=20 presented a statement
The = annual Walk=20 a Mile in My Shoes
was = held on May=20 24, 2007 on the
steps = of the=20 Capitol. This event drew
approximately one=20 thousand consum-
ers = from across=20 the state. The intent
of the = rally is=20 to ensure that legisla-
tors = and the=20 public are aware of the
impact = of mental=20 illness.
This = year, a=20 cloth map of the State of
Michigan was=20 available for each con-
sumer = to either=20 sign or put a thumb-
print = on as=20 recognition for participat-
ing in = the event.=20 This cloth =E2=80=98map=E2=80=99
will = then be=20 displayed throughout the
state = at=20 different CMH=E2=80=99s.
Ten = members from=20 Genesis House,
on the = steps of=20 the Capitol:
My = name is=20 Claudia Gillenwater. I
live = in=20 Livingston County and I have
struggled with=20 mental illness for 30
years. = I am very=20 concerned that the
proposed=20 reduction to Medicaid will
affect = the=20 services that have helped
me so = much. The=20 services that I
receive from CMH=20 and especially
the = Clubhouse=20 are the best that I
have = experienced=20 in my 30 year
struggle. It has=20 helped to stabilize
my = disease. I am=20 happier, healthier
and = more=20 accepted by my community.

house=20 involvement and 5) recovery

The = research=20 showed that Genesis
House = provides a=20 safe setting for indi-
viduals with=20 mental illness to engage in
the = process of=20 recovery. The club-
house = 1)=20 facilitates positive personal
relationships,=20 2) positive personal
growth = ,3) and=20 clarity of structure and
flexibility.=20

ness. = Fountain=20 House was also the
first = to create=20 a Clubhouse in which
